Reports to:  Principal and Executive Director of Human Resources

 

Qualifications:

  • Current Kansas license to practice as a professional Registered Nurse
  • CPR trained
  • Public school experience preferred
  • Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

Purpose and Objectives of the Position

The School Nurse sub provides the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools. To accomplish these tasks the School Nurse works closely with the staff and administration of the district.

 

Essential Functions:

  • To help identify and monitor children with health problems.
  • To serve as a district liaison between the home and school in all health matters.
  • To serve as a consultant to school personnel, families, and children regarding the health needs of the pupils, the faculty, and the school.
  • To review students’ health records with district and building personnel as needed.
  • To plan for and assist in the screening and re-screening of students. 
  • Interpret any significant findings.
  • Serve as a resource to health room assistants and other school staff.

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions.
  • Requires stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and turning.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Assess the health status of students. Collaborate with students, parents, and teachers to obtain treatment & rehabilitation.
  • Conduct health related screenings of students for vision, hearing, scoliosis, and routine weight and measurement check, and refer students when necessary.
  • Provide first aid for illness / injury.
  • Serve as a resource person in providing health education programs for students and school personnel.
  • Promote a positive working relationship between school and community health resources.
  • Assist in identification and accommodations for students with specific health problems or disabilities.
  • Monitor the districts’ compliance with current standards of immunization and communicable disease control as prescribed by the Division of Health.
  • Provide leadership to support health room assistants.
  • Assist the administration with evaluation and implementation of a healthy school environment.
  • Notify parents of sick or injured students, informing them of action taken and seeking further instruction from parents.
  • Maintain and update student health records and appropriate submission of accident reports.
  • Attend workshops and in-service for continued professional growth.
  • Assist in the determination and ordering of equipment and materials necessary to carry out the school health program.
  • Assist in the development of forms and procedures to be utilized in monitoring the district health program.
  • Work directly with building principal/staff in the use of human growth and development media.
  • Ability to attend staff meetings and general staff meetings.
  • Ability to assist in the maintenance and inventory of materials.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Ability to implement and follow all school district policies during all activities.
  • Ability to keep current on new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Ability to keep student information and records confidential.
  • Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
  • Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Ability to perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

Pre-Employment/Yearly Requirements: Employee shall meet all the pre-employment and yearly requirements as specified in the Policies of the Board of Education.

 

Term of Employment: At will.

 

Salary: $20.00/hr, based on the USD #453 Salary Schedule

 

FLSA Status:  Non - Exempt; Hourly

 

Evaluation: Performance effectiveness will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Board of Education Policy.
