Purpose:                  

In the absence of the classroom teacher, the substitute teacher enables each student to pursue his or her education as smoothly and completely as possible by providing instruction, encouraging student progress and managing the learning environment.

 

Reports To:             Building Principals, the Assistant Director of Human Resources, and the Coordinator of Human Resources

 

FLSA Status:           Exempt

 

Salary Range:         $150 (daily rate) - $200 (long-term rate) per day

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  1. A minimum requirement of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university OR qualify under the KSDE TEAL emergency Licensure guidelines
  2. A valid Kansas Teaching License, Kansas Standard Substitute Teaching License, or Kansas Emergency Substitute License
  3. Experience working with school age children preferred
  4. A negative Tuberculosis (TB) test dated within the past 18 months
  5. Complete a criminal background check 

 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Use of the district substitute placement system (currently Frontline/AESOP)
  2. Reports to the school office upon arrival and performs all check-in procedures as required
  3. Maintains the established routines and procedures of the assigned school and classroom as fully as possible
  4. Leads and facilitates lessons plans and activities for students as directed by the absent teacher
  5. Consults with a building administrator, department head, team leader, grade level teachers, etc. before initiating any teaching or other procedure not specified
  6. Follows all district and school policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates
  7. Maintains a clean and organized classroom environment
  8. Supporting and assisting fellow staff and administration as needed
  9. Develops and maintains positive student, teacher, staff, and parent relationships
  10. Encourages, models, and assumes responsibility for positive and appropriate classroom behavior
  11. Maintains a safe and welcoming classroom environment
  12. Maintains a positive attitude even in times of crisis or stress
  13. Other duties/responsibilities deemed necessary may be assigned

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  1. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  2. Ability to enter data into a computer, to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  3. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone
  4. Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone
  5. Ability to travel within the district
  6. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to height
  7. Ability to bend, stoop, sit on floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead
  8. Regular attendance and physical presence at the job
