Parents as Teachers Educator

 

Purpose: To provide personal instruction, demonstrate appropriate education activities; and deliver research-based printed material to parents regarding child development and related issues. To conduct child development screenings including but not limited to vision, hearing, the understanding and use of language, motor development, hand-eye coordination, health and physical development for prenatal to age five.

 

Reports To: Parents as Teachers Program Coordinator

 

Salary: $18.00 an Hour (Starting Rate)

 

Qualifications

 

  1. Bachelor's degree in early childhood or related field of study, preferred.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work with adults and their young children.
  3. Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as the board finds appropriate and acceptable.
  4. Previous experience and proven success in working with at risk populations
  5. Valid driver’s license and car.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

  1. Successfully complete the 0-36 month Parents as Teachers’ training and other training necessary to meet the requirements of this grant.
  2. Provide outreach to families residing in the school district.
  3. Conduct home visits with families. Be available to schedule visits mornings, afternoons, evenings and some weekend days.
  4. Collect and input all data required to show work and progress with enrolled families and their children, prenatal to 3 years of age.
  5. Work with community agencies and programs to recruit families within the school boundaries
  6. To provide periodic monitoring and screening to assure that enrolled children do not reach age three with an undetected health problem, handicap or developmental delay.
  7. To attend meetings as required and staff development training as needed.
  8. To participate in reflective supervision up to two times monthly.
  9. Knowledge of proven methods that retain families in home visiting services.
  10. Conduct group connections as assigned.
  11. Flexible hours and willingness to work evenings and weekends to meet with families.
  12. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

 

  1. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
  2. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift and reach.
  3. Requires the ability to travel.
  4. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  5. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

 

General Responsibilities

 

  1. Implement the curriculum provided by the National Parents As Teachers Center and the local district’s enhancements.
  2. Serve up to 30 families (part-time) or 45 families (full-time)
  3. Coordinate services with other community programs with similar purposes, make recommendations for further screenings, evaluations, etc.
  4. Support and enhance play groups, parent group connections, parent-child field trips, community events involving Parents As Teachers (health fairs, parent universities, speaking engagements, etc.)
  5. Complete and submit all required program evaluation and financial reports requested by program coordinator.
  6. Complete all required documentation regarding home visits, attendance records for Parents As Teachers events, screening summaries, and other reports requested by program coordinator.
  7. Support and enhance maintenance of a parent resource room.
  8. Assist in the planning and production of program newsletter.
  9. Assist in reviewing and evaluating results of annual parent surveys and other evaluative measures.
  10. Actively recruit volunteer families to participate in the program.
  11. Attend required certification training and become certified as a parent educator.
  12. Attend required follow-up in-service training.
  13. Attend training and become qualified to administer developmental screenings.
  14. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  15. Other duties as assigned by Parents as Teachers Program Coordinator, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of this position.

 

EVALUATION:     

  1. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy
  2. Parent educators will complete the Parents as Teachers Core Competencies Self-Assessment. It is advisable for parent educators to take the self-evaluation at the beginning of the program year to identify areas of strengths and areas for growth and then at the end of the year take the self-evaluation once again, checking on their progress.
  3. Based on the information obtained from the Core Competencies Self-Assessment form and under the guidance of the PAT Coordinator, the parent educator will write two to three competency-based job goals.
  4. The PAT supervisor will complete the district’s adopted Classified Evaluation form for the PAT coordinator once per year.
